Shaft-Making (Quill-Making) Tips are most commonly used for "raising" feather shafts or for layering wing and tail feathers on bird carvings. They have a square cross-sectional edge that will not "skate" when following a long line, and they leave a nice wide ramp into the raised area, reducing or eliminating the need to sand.
Split-Making tips are designed for making subtle splits in feathers. They can take a bit of practice but the results can be very impressive.
